Maha Mrtyunjaya

Om tryambakam yajamahe
Sugandhim pustivardhanam
Urvarukamiva bandhanan
Mrityormuksiya mamrtat

A note on pronunciation

it doesn’t have to be perfect, we do our best. Sian herself is not a sanskrit scholar, but she and we can endeavour to refine our pronunciation of the mantras as best as we can.

Sian has done her best to count through 108 beads on her mala, but it may happen that she has missed or added a mantra.

Maha Mrtyunjaya holds the highest place together with Gayatri as the supreme mantras for chanting, contemplation and meditation. Found in the Rig Veda, the most ancient surviving yogi text, it is known for its healing powers. It has the capacity to heal on all levels of our being - physical, emotiona, mental. It’s vibration creates change on a deep level and it has the capacity to purify karma. It is a calling to Shiva, Divine Consciousness, for the liberation of the soul from the samsaric cycles that hold us in suffering.

You are welcome to:

  • Sit with Sian and chant the mantra, taking time to rest and meditate after the 108 rounds is completed

  • Continue to repeat the 108 rounds more than once (as many times as you need)

  • Create a fire and after each round of mantra offer something to the fire (a thought, some paper from your journal) and as you do say the mantra SWAHA

  • Have this mantra repeating while you do other things.
